Cerrajero cambiando un bombín de una puerta

A cylinder is a security element for the door that is inserted into the lock and where the key is inserted. Knowing how to choose the ideal cylinder for your lock and knowing how to install it is important to make your door a superior element of protection. We are going to see step by step how we should remove the old cylinder from the lock and then place the new one.

First a quick video to see how this can be done:

Let's break down the steps:

Step 1. Unscrew the lock cylinder

The first thing you should know is that a cylinder is screwed to the door with a screw that goes from the door frame to the lock. Therefore, in order to carry out this operation, you must open the door and, with a screwdriver, remove the screw that is in the middle of the lock plate at the height of the cylinder.

Step 2. Remove the cylinder

Once unscrewed, insert a key into the cylinder and turn it slightly, ensuring that the cam is aligned with the cylinder so that by exerting pressure, you can extract the cylinder from the door. In the natural position of the key, the cam will always be slightly tilted for safety, preventing the cylinder from being extracted.

Step 3. Take measurements of your bowler hat

How to take measurements of a door cylinder

When you already have the cylinder out of the lock, you can distinguish two things: its measurement and the size of the cam. First, with a meter measure the distance from one side until the cam begins and from the other side until the cam begins. Next, measure the distance of the cam to know if it is short or long. The long cam measures 15mm and the short one 13.25mm.

Step 4. Choose a bowler hat

Once you know both the measurement and the size of the cam, you can start looking at a safety cylinder that meets those requirements. It is always good to look at the safety of the bowler hat since it is its main purpose: to protect your home.

Step 5. Insert the cylinder into the lock

Again, slightly turning the key of the new cylinder, insert it into your lock and screw it in from the edge of the door with the screw that is included in the package. Once installed, check that it works correctly.

We always recommend installing a cylinder with a safety shield. This will give extra essential protection to the cylinder to make it difficult to access the cylinder from the outside. Our obligation is to recommend maximum security so that you can live safer and more peaceful. Now, take a look at our collection of door cylinders and decide to renew the security of your doors.
