A doorknob is a classic piece of hardware that is installed on doors either to open them (in the case of interior doors) or to push them (in the case of entrance doors). Nowadays, the doorknob for entrance doors or street doors is a fixed piece of hardware that is common to see and install. It continues to fulfill its function, although it is true that sometimes handles are also chosen for entrance doors for aesthetic reasons.Differences between a knob and a handle
On the other hand, rotary knobs have become a type of hardware that is now being replaced. Nowadays, handles are installed on interior doors and passage doors and when the door needs to be locked, these are installed together with a lock or a push-button. On the other hand, knobs are more sophisticated hardware that includes a locking mechanism with a lock, a key or a free passage.Knobs are usually installed with tubular latches (although any latch will work) that are often included in the pack. They are round or oval in shape , with a 65mm diameter rosette , so when you want to replace a knob with a handle you should look for a handle with a larger diameter than usual (handles generally have a 50mm diameter). Its function remains the same: turn it to operate the latch and open the door.
The 3 types of existing knobs
As we have already mentioned above, there are 3 types of knobs : freely-operating knobs for passage doors, locking knobs with a thumbturn for bathroom doors and knobs with a key option to restrict access .Free-acting knobs are knobs whose function is literally exactly the same as a handle . Turn it to open the door. As we have already said, the rosette is 65 and therefore the hole you make in the door must also be larger. In addition, the knobs are not installed with wood lag screws but with through screws you join one to the other, thus pressing the door.
Door knobs with a locking mechanism are an optimal solution for bathrooms. Just as you currently need a single door handle, a lock and a set of handles, a door knob mechanism with a thumbturn would be enough to make a good installation on your toilet doors. On the inside there is the classic button to block the turning of the knob and on the outside there is an emergency release device that will allow you to unlock the mechanism so that when someone is locked in the bathroom they can enter from the outside.
Finally, there is the keyed door knob . This simply has a locking function similar to that of a deadbolt , but instead of having a button, it is locked and unlocked by means of a key. Naturally, there is a button on the inside of the door so that if you get locked in, you can open the door that way.
