To start with, you should know that there are two types of cleaning depending on the material you want to clean. First, there are handles made of Zamak, aluminum, brass, or any other material except stainless steel. Normally, these materials have a plated or varnished finish that covers the base material to make the handle look more attractive and elegant on your door. These finishes are usually superficial and therefore sensitive to cleaning with any "typical cleaning" material. To clean these handles, knobs, and latches, it is highly recommended that you only use a damp cloth to clean them. Any cleaning material containing chemicals could corrode the varnish layer on the handles.

Secondly, there are stainless steel handles. These require different tricks to be cleaned. In principle, wiping a damp cloth over the handles is enough to leave them as shiny as before. However, sometimes, stainless steel can develop a type of black spot that requires a tool with a rougher texture to clean. We recommend using a slightly damp scouring pad. You just have to gently rub the black areas of the handle and it will be as good as new.

Once the varnish has peeled off your handle, you have two alternatives. First, you could repair it by applying a new coat of varnish, although you would have to see if it is economically worthwhile, as you would likely incur a cost higher than buying a new set of handles.
