The type of profile

There are two main types of profiles: metal and wooden. Gypsum board screws differ depending on the type of profile for which they are intended, since they have a different thread. Screws for metal profiles have a fine and regular thread, while screws for wooden profiles have a coarser and more irregular thread.

Gypsum board thickness

The thickness of the drywall also influences the choice of screw, as it determines the length of the screw. Gypsum board screws typically range in length from 25 to 75 mm, depending on the thickness of the board. As a general rule, it is recommended that the screw protrude about 10 mm behind the plate.

The environment where the plasterboard is going to be placed

Another aspect to consider is the environment where the plasterboard will be placed, as it can affect the material and the coating of the screw. Drywall screws can be made of steel or stainless steel, and can have a phosphated, zinc-plated, or dichromate coating. These coatings protect the screw from corrosion and give it a different color. For example, phosphated screws are black, zinc-plated screws are silver, and dichromate screws are gold.

Gypsum board screws should be chosen according to the degree of humidity and salinity of the environment where they will be installed. For example, if it is a humid or saline environment, such as a bathroom or kitchen, it is recommended to use stainless steel screws or screws with a zinc or dichromate coating. How to drive drywall screws correctly?

To drive drywall screws correctly, follow these steps:

- Place the plasterboard on the profile and adjust it well.

- Mark with a pencil the points where the screws are going to be placed. It is recommended to put a screw every 20 or 30 cm on the edge and every 40 or 50 cm in the center.

- Use an electric screwdriver with a tip suitable for the type of screw head.

- Insert the screw into the marked point and screw it in until it is flush with the surface of the plate. Do not overtighten the screw to avoid damaging the plate or profile.

- Repeat the process with the rest of the screws and plates.
