All about door hinges

Although hinges (pernios) belong to the hinge family and perform the same pivoting function, the former are primarily characterized by their separability. They consist of two hinge parts that can be separated from each other, which makes their operation and common installation on doors and windows simpler. Another relevant aspect to consider when installing door hinges is that they differ depending on whether the door opens to the right or to the left. This movement will influence the installation of the hinge, depending on whether it must be pushed with the right or left hand.

In general terms, there is only one type of hinge. What varies are the finishes or the materials from which they are made. This will influence the choice and may differ depending on the type of door or window the hinge is installed on, as hinges for wooden doors, aluminum doors, or interior doors will not be the same.

How to know which hinge I need

It is common to confuse these hinges with regular hinges, sometimes because the same terms are used to talk about the rotation of both. The pernio (a specific type of lift-off hinge) will always be detachable, and to choose one or the other, you must consider different factors such as the support to which it must be attached (for example, whether it needs to be welded or screwed) or the installation location (on interior or exterior doors). In addition, the resistance will depend on the weight it must support. The finishes (which can be round-tipped, square-tipped, or urn-shaped) or the toppings they may incorporate will also be different.

Sometimes accessories such as washers for door hinges are used, which allow the height of the door to be modified or adjusted. The washers depend on the type of finish and the diameter or thickness of the hinge.

How to install

When installing a lift-off hinge, unlike a regular hinge, it must be positioned taking into account how the door opens (whether to the right or left). Once we know which way it opens and what type of hinge it is, the process is very similar to that of a regular hinge: position it on the door and frame, align it, screw it in, adjust the position, and test that it works correctly.
